NEW DELHI: India batter Shreyas Iyer, who sustained a serious injury during the India–Australia ODI series, is reportedly in doubt for the upcoming South Africa tour starting on November 30.

The middle-order batter has been a crucial part of India’s white-ball setup, but his recovery process is taking time.

Report suggests extended recovery period

According to a report by The Indian Express, Iyer is yet to regain full match fitness and may not be ready in time for the three-match ODI series against the Proteas.

“He will take more time to be fully match fit and the board and selection committee doesn’t want to rush after his injury. He is doubtful for the South Africa ODI series,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying in the report.

Severe health scare during Australia series

The incident occurred during the third ODI against Australia when Iyer suffered an internal injury while attempting a catch. He was rushed to hospital after reportedly collapsing in the dressing room. Doctors placed him in the ICU after he experienced a sudden drop in oxygen levels and internal bleeding.

Iyer’s oxygen had dropped to 50 and for ten minutes he wasn’t able to stand properly. There was a complete blackout around him and it took him some time to come back to normal,” the BCCI source told The Indian Express.

Key pillar in India’s middle order

Iyer has been one of the mainstays of India’s batting unit in ODIs. Known for his composure under pressure and ability to anchor the innings, he played a vital role in India’s Champions Trophy campaign, finishing as highest run-scorer in that edition.

His absence could leave a big gap in the middle order as India prepares for a challenging South African tour.
