Former India batter Robin Uthappa believes the SA20 is poised to revolutionise South African cricket, providing a platform for young talent to shine and potentially catch the eyes of IPL scouts.
The league has already showcased emerging stars such as batters Rubin and Jordan Hermann, as well as pacers Kwena Maphaka and 18-year-old Nqobani Mokoena, who have represented South Africa at various levels over the past four years.
SA20: The launchpad for global cricket talent
Uthappa, who is in South Africa as a commentator, praised the league’s intensity and quality. “As far as atmosphere and standard of cricket are concerned, SA20 is the second-best league after the IPL. You will see South African cricket thriving through it,” he said.
He added that the league is already creating opportunities for players to break into other global competitions. “The likes of Mokoena and Jordan Hermann are players for the future. Even IPL scouts will be watching them closely. You’ll see these talents in world cricket very soon.”
Beyond player development, Uthappa noted SA20’s appeal to Indian viewers. “People want to watch high-quality cricket anywhere. With matches ending around midnight, it fits perfectly for Indian audiences. The intensity and standard of cricket are only going to improve,” he said.
He also emphasised that the league’s growth mirrors the early evolution of the IPL. “IPL became IPL after its fourth or fifth season. SA20 is climbing the same ladder. Given time and space, it will produce consistently high-quality cricket and become a cornerstone of global T20.”
Uthappa concluded that SA20 is strategically positioned to capture the attention of cricket fans worldwide. “Cricket is evolving at a rapid pace. With leagues like this aligned to India’s time zones and audience patterns, it can thrive. Viewers have the patience to see SA20 grow into a truly elite tournament.”
