On Instagram, the ex-captain of India wrote, "One last time, signing off from Sydney," which is a message that questions right away whether it is the end of the senior duo Virat and Rohit Kohli of India."
In fact, just two days back, Rohit had insinuated that the recently concluded ODI series against Australia might be the last Down Under tour for him and Virat Kohli. After retirement from Tests and T20Is, both the players are only playing the 50-over format, and their careers have been closely watched as India is going through a transition phase.
In a series full of struggles, the two magnificent batsmen, Rohit and Kohli, came back with a vengeance in the last ODI, India’s final innings, they combined for a glorious 168-run partnership that was not broken to take India to a nine-wicket win and thus, a series victory was prevented. Besides being the Player of the Match, Rohit was also awarded Player of the Series after making an excellent 121, whereas Kohli gave 74 runs in a composed manner.
“Always love coming here and playing here. Fond memories of 2008. I’m not sure if we’ll be coming back to Australia, but we enjoy our cricket no matter what accolades we achieve,” Rohit said after the match, reflecting on his long and successful journey in Australia.
He also acknowledged the unique challenge of performing in Australian conditions: “You expect tough pitches and quality bowlers here. Playing in Australia is never easy. We couldn’t win the series, but there are plenty of positives. It’s a young side, and there will be a lot of learnings.”
Rohit further underlined the importance of guiding the next generation of cricketers. “When I came into the squad, seniors helped us a lot; now it’s our turn to do the same — to mentor the youngsters, create plans, and go back to basics.”
For Rohit, Australia remains more than just another destination on the cricketing calendar. “I’ve had great memories here — from the SCG to Perth. I love playing here and hope to continue doing what I do,” he added, expressing his deep affection for the country and its passionate fans.
