NEW DELHI: India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma will undergo a pre-season fitness test at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru on Saturday. According to The Indian Express, Test captain Shubman Gill, along with Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur, will also take the Yo-Yo Test.
However, the status of Virat Kohli's fitness test remains unclear. Both Kohli and Rohit, who now feature only in ODIs after retiring from T20Is and Test cricket, will undoubtedly have their sights set on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"All players have to undergo a pre-season fitness Test, it's mandatory as per the contract. These tests help the COE understand the areas the players have to work on or where they are lacking. As there was a big break (after the England Test series), the players were given sets of exercises to do at home," The Indian Express quoted a BCCI official as saying.
India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has already completed his fitness test, along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya and spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Kohli and Rohit will feature in the three-match ODI series against Australia in October - their first international assignment since the Champions Trophy in March.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that with sufficient match practice, nothing can prevent Kohli and Rohit from remaining in contention for the 2027 World Cup.
"For Kohli and Rohit, the only challenge would be to play regular cricket. Otherwise, they are all outstanding. Talking about these professional cricketers, whose only focus is to play cricket for now, the biggest challenge for them would be playing regularly and staying fit.
"Virat is going to play IPL only, and then whenever there is First-Class cricket, but just to play and not to prove anything. So, continuing the game time will not be an easy task. T20 has taken over and one-dayers have taken a backseat, so the number of matches has gotten changed in both. World Cup 2027 won't be a challenge if continuity of the game time is handled. Unfortunately, there will be pressure on them," Pathan told RevSportz.
