NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill's maiden outing as India's ODI captain turned out to be a forgettable one, as he was dismissed cheaply for 10 in the first ODI against Australia in Perth. Rohit Sharma, whom Gill replaced as skipper, also endured a disappointing return to international cricket after a seven-month hiatus, getting dismissed for 8 runs.
The game was repeatedly halted by rain, forcing players to stay indoors for extended periods. During one such break, Rohit and Gill were spotted in the pavilion, casually enjoying popcorn and sharing a few laughs as they watched the drizzle over the Perth ground - a rare moment of calm amid the intensity of the contest.

The match was reduced to a 35-over-a-side game after the second rain interruption. India were struggling at 37 for three in 11.5 overs when rain halted the proceedings. Each bowler can bowl a maximum of 7 overs each.
Only 15 balls were possible before another spell of drizzle forced the players off the field. However, Australia deepened India's troubles soon after, with Josh Hazlewood striking again to dismiss Shreyas Iyer for his second wicket.

The match was further reduced to 32 overs per side, with two bowlers allowed to bowl a maximum of seven overs each, while three bowlers could bowl up to six overs each.
Earlier, Virat Kohli also failed to fire on their return to the India colours after seven months. Kohli got out for an eight-ball duck to Mitchell Starc while Rohit was ousted by Josh Hazlewood for eight.
Later, skipper Gill was caught down the leg side off pacer Nathan Ellis for 10.
