NEW DELHI: When Rohit Sharma takes the field, the record books in ODI cricket have to be rewritten as the former India skipper stands on the cusp of owning another record, which he has a chance to achieve in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday.
With 349 sixes to his name in ODIs, Rohit now needs three more maximums to become the batter with the most sixes in the format. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi sits atop the list with 351 maximums in 398 matches. If Rohit fails to achieve the landmark in the first match, he will in all probability attain the feat during the series, considering his knack for hitting sixes at will.

Once Rohit reaches the milestone, his record may remain untouched for years, especially with Virat Kohli being the only active player in the top 20 and sitting at 152 sixes.
Batters with most sixes in ODIs:
1. Shahid Afridi (Pakistan): 351 sixes
2. Rohit Sharma (India): 349 sixes
3. Chris Gayle (West Indies): 331 sixes
4. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka): 270 sixes
5. MS Dhoni (India): 229 sixes
Rohit named ICC brand ambassador of 2026 T20 World Cup
Rohit, who captained reigning champions India to glory at the previous T20 World Cup in 2024, was on Tuesday named the tournament ambassador for the 2026 edition to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
Many months into his retirement from T20I and Test format, the 38-year-old titan of Indian cricket said he is getting used to sitting at home and watching the action unfold on TV instead of being part of it.
"I was told by someone that while playing no one has been announced as an ambassador so it's a great privilege and honour for me," Rohit said during the unveiling of the schedule for the upcoming showpiece that will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
