Earlier, it was believed that Mumbai would begin their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign without one of their biggest stars. Rohit’s expected absence had generated curiosity among fans eager to see senior India players return to domestic cricket during the ongoing international break. Notably, his initial unavailability was neither due to injury nor workload management from the national selectors.
Rohit Sharma, Jaiswal, Suryakumar set to boost Mumbai’s Campaign

Mumbai’s selectors had reportedly planned to rest Rohit during the opening phase of the tournament to provide opportunities to younger players and assess their performances under pressure. However, a fresh PTI report has rekindled hopes of seeing the former Indian captain in action in the first two matches. Following these games, Rohit is expected to shift focus to India’s ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11, 2026.
Apart from Rohit, Yashasvi Jaiswal is also expected to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai. Jaiswal recently played a Ranji Trophy match and was part of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy earlier this season before his campaign was interrupted by a bout of gastritis.
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and all-rounder Shivam Dube are also likely to be available for Mumbai later in the tournament. The duo, who were part of India’s recent 3-1 T20I series win over South Africa, are expected to play matches against Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on January 6 and 8 respectively in Jaipur, an MCA official told PTI. Both players are slated to join the Indian squad for the T20I series against New Zealand beginning January 21.
