BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has dismissed reports suggesting that the upcoming ODI series will be Rohit’s swansong. Shukla stated that questions about their farewell matches should not arise since both players are still active.
"They haven't retired, haven't they? Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both playing One-Dayers. They haven't taken retirement, so why are you talking and worrying about their farewell? Retirement from two formats, that's the phase, but they are still playing ODIs. Don't worry this much. BCCI policy is quite clear; we won't ask anyone to retire, they have to make their decisions themselves. He has to take that call, and we respect that," Rajeev Shukla said in a viral video.
The last tournament Rohit and Virat featured in was the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. Kohli stood out with a century in a successful chase against Pakistan during the group stage and followed it up with a match-winning 84 against Australia in the semi-final. Rohit, meanwhile, played a crucial knock of 76 off 83 balls against New Zealand in the final, guiding India to a successful chase of 255 in 49 overs.
With the ODI World Cup 2027 still two years away, both stalwarts will need to maintain their form in the build-up, especially with several youngsters making strong impressions at the international level and pushing for selection.
