NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may have been included in the 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series in Australia, but their future in ODI cricket remains uncertain, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealing that both players are currently 'non-committal' about participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Agarkar's remarks strongly suggest that the Indian stalwarts might be contemplating retirement from international cricket, given that their participation is currently limited to ODIs after retiring from Tests and T20Is.
When asked about the possibility of them playing only one format going forward, Agarkar said: "Those are two really experienced guys who have been around for a long time. They will find it really weird to play just one format. You should ask them. It doesn't happen too many times."

On their fitness levels after a long break, Agarkar said: "They have both done their fitness tests. They've gone through the required norms that have been put in place. I haven't heard anything beyond that."
Agarkar also clarified that to continue representing India in ODIs, Rohit and Kohli must participate in domestic cricket, specifically the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
"Whenever the guys are playing or not, they should be playing domestic cricket. Whether it's possible alongside international cricket or not, time will tell," he said.
In a significant transition move, the Indian selectors removed Rohit from ODI captaincy and expectedly handed over the reins to young Shubman Gill, keeping the 2027 World Cup in mind.
Agarkar confirmed that Rohit has indeed been communicated about the change in captaincy but kept it open-ended when asked if both him and Kohli will play the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"Yes. I mean that is the format they are playing at the moment and we (have) picked them. As far as the 2027 (ODI) World Cup is concerned, I don't think we need to talk about it today, obviously with the captaincy change that's generally the thought," said Agarkar.
Agarkar also made it clear that with very few ODIs being played nowadays, it is impossible to look at three different captains as it hampers the general planning of the squad.
"Firstly, it's practically impossible to have three different captains for three formats, just in terms of planning," Agarkar said.
