NEW DELHI: The ongoing discussions in Indian cricketing circles revolve around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement from ODIs, following their decision to bid adieu to Test cricket earlier this year. However, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has brushed aside such concerns, stating that questions about their farewell matches should not arise since both players are still active.

Putting all speculation to rest, Rohit and Virat have resumed training ahead of their return to white-ball cricket. During a talk show, Shukla was asked whether the duo would receive a farewell similar to Sachin Tendulkar's when he retired from the game.

"They haven't retired, haven't they? Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both playing One-Dayers. They haven't taken retirement, so why are you talking and worrying about their farewell? Retirement from two formats, that's the phase, but they are still playing ODIs. Don't worry this much. BCCI policy is quite clear; we won't ask anyone to retire, they have to make their decisions themselves. He has to take that call, and we respect that," Rajeev Shukla said in a viral video.

"We'll cross the bridge when we come to it. You are already arranging their farewell! Virat Kohli is very fit, and Rohit Sharma plays very well. Why are you worried about their farewell?" Shukla responded.

A report also suggested that Rohit is keen to participate in the unofficial ODI series against Australia A, scheduled to begin on 30 September 2025, with all matches set to be played in Kanpur.

Rohit is keen to get some match practice before flying to Australia, which is why he plans to feature in the three unofficial ODIs at Green Park, as per RevSportz.

India's tour of Australia begins on October 19 with a three-match ODI series, scheduled at Optus Stadium (Perth), Adelaide Oval (Adelaide), and Sydney Cricket Ground (Sydney) on October 19, 23, and 25, respectively. The tour will also feature a five-match T20I series.

Both icons brought down the curtain on their T20I careers after guiding India to the 2024 World Cup title in the West Indies. They went on to announce their Test retirements within days of each other in May 2025. Since the conclusion of IPL 2025, India have not featured in any ODI matches.
