South Africa legend Herschelle Gibbs has launched a scathing attack on young batter Dewald Brevis following his underwhelming performances in the SA20 2025–26 season. Brevis, who was the most expensive buy at this year’s auction for R16.5 million, has struggled to justify his price tag while representing Pretoria Capitals.

The highly rated youngster failed to make an impact in consecutive matches, scoring just 6 off 6 balls against Joburg Super Kings during a 167-run chase, followed by a disappointing 12 off 5 against Sunrisers Eastern Cape while chasing 189. In both games, Brevis walked in with responsibility on his shoulders but failed to deliver.

‘No Game Management’: Gibbs slams Dewald Brevis’ approach

Brevis’ dismissals prompted Gibbs to take to social media, where the former Proteas opener openly questioned the batter’s temperament and match awareness.

“Would love to know what the coaches are saying to this Brevis boy. He’s not showing any signs of game management, even though he’s played plenty of T20s already,” Gibbs wrote on X.

Gibbs further criticised Brevis’ lack of accountability at the crease, hinting at deeper concerns about his batting habits.

“More responsibility must come from him, but he doesn’t give me the impression he wants that. Batting is about habits, and that’s not a good sign for him,” he added.

In both matches highlighted by Gibbs, Pretoria Capitals were in positions that demanded composure. Against Joburg Super Kings, Brevis came in at 75/2 after 10.3 overs with the chase delicately poised. Instead of stabilising the innings, he fell cheaply.

The situation was even more concerning against Sunrisers Eastern Cape, where Capitals were 50/2 in just 5.2 overs. Brevis managed only a boundary and a six before being dismissed by Lewis Gregory in the eighth over. Pretoria Capitals went on to lose both matches.

What adds to the concern is Brevis’ prolonged dip in form over the past few months. During the recent T20I series against India, he averaged just 17.25, scoring 69 runs across four matches. His struggles continued against Pakistan in October–November, where he averaged 18.33 from three T20Is.

With expectations mounting and scrutiny intensifying, Brevis now faces serious questions about his temperament and ability to shoulder responsibility at the top level.
