India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under heavy scrutiny on social media following the team’s ODI series defeat against New Zealand at home. After taking a 1–0 lead, Shubman Gill’s side failed to build on the advantage and went on to lose the three-match series 1–2.

The final ODI in Indore proved particularly disappointing for India. Chasing a stiff target of 338, the hosts fell short by 41 runs despite a magnificent century from Virat Kohli, who scored 124 in a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful effort.

The loss marked India’s first-ever home ODI series defeat to New Zealand and the third series loss under Gambhir’s tenure as head coach, following earlier setbacks against Sri Lanka and Australia.

Amid the criticism, veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane weighed in with measured advice for Gambhir and the team management. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Rahane pointed to frequent changes in the playing XI as a key factor behind India’s inconsistent performances.

“India have lost five ODIs in the last nine, and one big reason is too many changes,” Rahane said. “If you are looking ahead to the 2027 World Cup, players need security and clarity about their roles. It’s always about giving that clarity if you plan to back certain players in a particular format.”

Rahane acknowledged that tough questions were inevitable, especially given the expectations surrounding Indian cricket. “Fans are deeply connected to the team and always expect India to win, particularly at home. Against New Zealand, with due respect, expectations were that India would win comfortably, probably 3–0,” he added.

India’s next ODI assignment is at least six months away, offering the team management time to reassess their approach. Rahane believes the break should be used to identify and back players who fit into India’s long-term ODI plans.

“The way New Zealand played was outstanding, so questions will be asked. But from India’s point of view, they need to stick to the process. Identify the players you want to back because you have time before ODI cricket resumes,” Rahane said.
