NEW DELHI: The BCCI’s announcement of India’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has sparked intense debate across the cricketing fraternity.

Several selections raised eyebrows, including the omission of vice-captain Shubman Gill after a prolonged dip in form in the shortest format. At the same time, Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh earned recalls following consistent performances.

Amid the discussion, former India opener Aakash Chopra put forward his alternate 15-man squad, offering a contrasting take on the possible make-up of Team India. His selection focuses on experience, balance, and players who have previously delivered under pressure.

Chopra’s squad features Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opening pair, combining stability with attacking intent. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant form the core of the middle order, with Chopra backing their ability to handle high-pressure situations in big tournaments.

KL Rahul’s inclusion is another notable call. Despite recent inconsistency, Chopra believes Rahul’s flexibility across roles makes him a valuable option.

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Krunal Pandya provide depth in both batting and bowling. Jitesh Sharma is picked as a finisher, reflecting the growing importance of lower-order power hitting in t20 cricket.

The bowling unit is built around experience. Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bring swing and control with the new ball. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj add pace and aggression through the middle and death overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal remains the frontline spinner, trusted for his wicket-taking ability on big occasions.
