England batter Phil Salt believes India have overtaken his national side as the new “trendsetters” in world cricket. The explosive opener admitted that while England once led the global T20 revolution, it is now India who dictate how modern cricket is played.
Salt reflected on the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, where England thrashed India by 10 wickets and seemed miles ahead in approach. He recalled opening with Alex Hales and Jos Buttler and watching them dismantle India’s attack effortlessly.
“That night, in the 2022 semi-final, we were absolutely the trendsetters. The way we played then was a result of years of development,” Salt said on the RCB Podcast.
However, Salt admitted that the shift in power since then has been significant. India have won the T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup since 2024, and also humbled England in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final in Guyana.
“But now, I feel India has taken over,” Salt continued. “They lead the pack. That semi-final in Guyana showed it. On that day, at that venue, they would have taken something unbelievable to beat.”
Salt hopes England will rise again, but concedes India's dominance is clear. The Men in Blue currently sit atop the ICC Men’s T20I rankings with 272 rating points and have won nine straight T20I series or events since 2023. With South Africa and New Zealand tours coming up, India continue building momentum ahead of hosting the 2025 T20 World Cup.
