NEW DELHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly decided not to renew the contract of women’s national team head coach Muhammad Wasim following the side’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup in India.

Pakistan’s campaign has been disappointing, with the team placed seventh on the eight-team points table and at risk of finishing last if Bangladesh win their final group match. They lost four of their seven games, with the other three washed out due to rain.

According to sources within the PCB, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was unhappy with Wasim’s inability to produce the desired results during his tenure. Appointed last year, Wasim oversaw Pakistan’s semi-final exit in the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka and a solitary win from four games at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

The primary criticism against Wasim, a former batter, has been the lack of progress in the team’s batting department, which continues to be Pakistan’s weakest area in major tournaments.

Sources also revealed that there were complaints about Wasim’s attitude and his limited communication with other team officials, which affected the team environment.

The PCB is expected to name a new head coach within the next few days and is reportedly in discussions with a foreign candidate for the position.
