NEW DELHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to remove women’s team head coach Muhammad Wasim following the side’s disappointing performance at the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.
Though Pakistan had qualified for the tournament earlier this year by finishing on top in the qualifiers held in Lahore, their World Cup campaign proved disastrous. The Fatima Sana-led team finished last among eight teams in the competition, which was co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. All of Pakistan’s matches were played in Colombo.
The team lost four matches while three games were washed out due to rain. In a statement, the PCB confirmed that Wasim’s contract had ended with the World Cup and would not be renewed. The board will soon appoint a new head coach to lead the team forward.
Wasim, a former Test cricketer and ex-chief selector of the men’s side, had taken charge of the women’s team last year. During his tenure, Pakistan failed to make significant progress, losing in the Asia Cup semifinals and exiting early in the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
A reliable source revealed that the PCB is exploring options for a foreign coach, but if a suitable candidate is not found, former captain Bismah Maroof could be considered for the role. The rest of the support staff is also expected to be replaced in the coming days.
