Rain had the final say as the Women’s ODI World Cup group match between New Zealand and Pakistan was abandoned on Saturday, confirming South Africa’s place in the semifinals as the second team to qualify from the group.

Rain plays spoilsport as New Zealand vs Pakistan ends in no result

Play had endured a lot of interruptions during the night but the officials finally decided to call it off around 9 p.m. local time with Pakistan at a score of 92 runs for 5 wickets in 25 overs after they were put to bat first. The ruling of abandoned match meant that both the teams had to be content with sharing the points.

New Zealand remained in the fifth position on the points table, having taken four points from their five matches, and Pakistan, who had yet to win a match, was still at the bottom with two points from two games.

The second rain stoppage came when Aaliya Riaz (28 not out) and Sidra Nawaz (6 not out) had just started to build the innings, and the batter could not wait any longer to get in. Earlier, Natalia Pervaiz (10) and skipper Fatima Sana (2) fell victim to poor batting and Pakistan found themselves in trouble with only 52 runs and 3 wickets down after 12.2 overs which was soon followed by the first rain delay.
