NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his delight as Guwahati made its debut as India's newest Test centre on Saturday, hosting the second and final match of the series against South Africa.

He said the historic occasion would inspire young cricketers in the region and fuel their sporting ambitions.

"Guwahati creates history! Proud to see ACA Stadium become India's 30th Test venue, bringing the pinnacle of cricket to Assam," Sarma said in a post on X.

"This moment will inspire countless young talents and elevate our sporting ambitions even higher. Onward to a new innings for Assam!" he added.

Guwahati, often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Northeast', is the region's only international cricket venue and earlier this year earned the distinction of hosting ICC World Cup matches for the first time.

South Africa currently hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series after a 30-run victory in the opening Test in Kolkata.
