NEW DELHI: Tilak Varma smashing Shaheen Afridi for a six and a four to seal India's victory against Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super 4 match was a sight to behold. His batting elegance even left legendary Sunil Gavaskar in awe, who said Tilak "treated Pakistan's premier bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, like a net-ball spinner."
Tilak, walking in at No.4, held his nerves after a few late hiccups in India's chase and saved his best for the last. Tilak deposited Shaheen into the crowd at long-off followed by a boundary towards deep backward square-leg as India cruised home in 18.5 overs.
"In the end, another super-talented batter, Tilak Varma, treated Pakistan's premier bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, like a net-ball spinner and smashed him around to wrap a win with deliveries to spare," Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Sportstar.
For his finishing effort, Tilak was awarded the 'Impact Player of the Match' medal by training assistant Raghavindraa in the dressing room, following head coach Gautam Gambhir's request to do the honours.
"I was so happy. I wanted to finish the game in the last two matches as well, but couldn't. Today, my turn came, and I was able to do it for the team. I will keep trying till the end of the tournament. As Gauti sir said, even till the World Cup, we will keep learning and moving forward," Tilak said in a dressing room BTS video shared by the BCCI.

Gavaskar also highlighted how Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill's 105-run opening stand left Pakistan with no chance of staging a comeback.
"India breezed to a win after a delightful opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill that took the breath away and crushed any hopes the Pakistanis had of winning the game," Gavaskar observed.
