NEW DELHI: Former England captain Michael Vaughan has shared a deeply emotional message after the passing of his father, paying tribute to the man he described as his hero, mentor and closest friend.
Vaughan wrote that his father passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, leaving behind memories that will last a lifetime.
A final goodbye filled with love
Vaughan spoke about the pain of the farewell but also the comfort of being present in his father’s final moments.
“With a heavy heart and tears rolling down my cheek as I type yesterday we said goodbye to my hero, my mentor, my best pal & most importantly the greatest DAD anyone could ever want,” Vaughan wrote.
He added that his father passed away calmly and with dignity, embraced by those closest to him.
“He left us peacefully & in no pain in my brother’s arms to a standing ovation,” he said.
Cherishing the last moments together
The former England skipper also reflected on how grateful he felt to spend precious time with his father before his passing.
“I am just so blessed to have made it home to spend the most special 30 hrs laying next to him talking crying & as always with Dad laughing,” Vaughan shared.
He described his father as someone who lived life with energy and joy, always encouraging those around him to do the same.
“He really has had an incredible zest for life and making sure he lives his but more importantly encouraged all around him to do the same,” he wrote.
Gratitude and legacy
Vaughan went on to thank his family and those who cared for his father during his final days, reserving special praise for his brother David and sister in law Caroline for their unwavering support.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical teams who looked after his father and the hospice where he spent his final moments.
“You are where he wanted to announce his innings was over,” Vaughan said, using a touching cricketing metaphor.
Ending the tribute, Vaughan spoke of love, loss and legacy.
“RIP DAD .. We all love you so much and you are going to be hugely missed but your legacy will last forever,” he concluded.
