Faf du Plessis and Moeen Ali have officially confirmed their availability for PSL 2026, while Glenn Maxwell is also reportedly set to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Their decisions come at a time when several veteran overseas players have chosen to skip the IPL 2026 auction, opting instead for the Pakistan Super League, which runs during the same window as the IPL.

Moeen joined the IPL in 2018, while Du Plessis and Maxwell have been part of the league since 2011 and 2013, even captaining franchises during their long stints. Their sudden switch has sparked curiosity among fans. Why would established IPL names choose PSL after so many years?

Former England pacer David Willey, who has represented RCB and CSK, offered insight into the trend.

Why some foreign players prefer PSL over IPL

The biggest factor is auction uncertainty. Since PSL and IPL overlap, players can register for only one. Choosing the IPL means competing in a crowded auction pool where even top names can go unsold, something that once happened to Chris Gayle in 2011. PSL offers more certainty and security, making it appealing for veterans.

Another major consideration is guaranteed playing time. While the IPL offers bigger contracts, many overseas players end up on the bench. Willey cited Nathan Ellis, one of the world’s best T20 bowlers, who played just one match for CSK last season. In contrast, PSL teams often provide more consistent opportunities.

“I think it’s very individual. You never quite know how the IPL auction will pan out,” Willey told Hindustan Times. “There’s more certainty with PSL for some players, and they may feel they have a better chance of actually playing rather than sitting on the sidelines for 10–11 weeks. That can be a defining factor.”
