NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan Test captain Misbah ul Haq is set to assume the role of Director of International Cricket Operations at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

According to the advertisement for the position, candidates must have experience as a former domestic or international cricketer. A source within the PCB revealed that chairman Mohsin Naqvi personally persuaded Misbah to apply, with the vision of having the former skipper and head coach manage the country’s international cricket affairs.

Misbah remains closely linked with the PCB, currently serving as a mentor and advisor to the chairman on cricket matters. He is reported to have influenced key decisions recently, including the removal of Mohammad Rizwan as ODI captain and advising against recalling top batter Babar Azam for the T20 side.

After retiring in 2017, Misbah was appointed head coach and chief selector in 2019, but resigned as chief selector within a year. His tenure as head coach ended prematurely in 2021 when Ramiz Raja took over as PCB chairman.

Despite stepping down from those roles, Misbah has maintained strong ties with the PCB. His last major assignment was mentoring a domestic team in 2024, earning a reported salary of 5 million rupees per month.

Chairman Naqvi also included Misbah on his advisory panel for cricket matters alongside former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, Sikander Bakht, and Aaqib Javed.

The PCB recently announced the vacancy for Director of International Cricket Operations, confirming that long-serving Usman Wahla will step down from the position and move to the Pakistan Super League secretariat.
