Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne has urged critics to refrain from offering advice to Usman Khawaja, who is currently struggling with form in Test cricket. Apart from a commanding 232-run knock in January, Khawaja has failed to cross 50 in his other 13 Test innings in 2025.
“I don’t think he needs advice. He’s 38, been around the block for a long time. He’s an amazing player. The way he’s approached his game, from batting at No. 3, 4, and even opening the innings, while navigating tricky scenarios, has been just awesome,” Labuschagne told India Today.
The 31-year-old highlighted Khawaja’s impressive career numbers, urging the media not to speculate on when he should retire. “The team comes first at every stage. He’s played 85 Tests, averaging 43.56 across the globe. He’s been phenomenal, but decisions about retirement aren’t for me or anyone else to make,” he added.
Labuschagne also praised Khawaja’s adaptability and experience, noting how the left-handed batter has adjusted to different roles over time. Speaking ahead of the ongoing Ashes series, Australia defeated England by eight wickets in the series opener in Perth, completing the match within just two days. The second Test, a pink-ball affair, is set to begin on Thursday, December 4, in Brisbane, with Australia naming an unchanged squad. All eyes will be on Khawaja as the hosts aim to extend their lead in the series.
