England‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ pacer Mark Wood seems convinced that Australia would be the ones to take the next Ashes series as their victims. However, he also talks about a "quiet confidence" among the English players that they are going to give a tough challenge when the big clash will kick off in a couple of weeks. Without a doubt, it will be an outstanding achievement for England to break the 14-year losing streak that they have in Australia with their last away triumph in ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌2010–11.

Mark Wood optimistic despite an injury layoff

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Wood acknowledged Australia’s edge but expressed faith in England’s preparations and mindset. “Australia are obviously the favourites going into the series, but I think there's a quiet confidence within our group that we can do well here,” he said.

The express pacer, who has not played a Test in 15 months, is returning from a knee injury sustained during the Champions Trophy in February. “I wouldn't say I'm at 100%. It’s hard to train fully all the time, but I’ve been increasing my intensity and will look to ramp it up in the practice game,” he added.

Reflecting on his rehabilitation, the 35-year-old admitted the recovery process was long and frustrating. “It was really boring for six months and not a straight trajectory. There were ups and downs, but it’s finally nice to be outside in good weather, ramping it up.”

Wood is particularly looking forward to bowling at the fast and bouncy Perth Stadium, where he featured once during the 2022 T20 World Cup. “It was rapid. I’m not sure my back is looking forward to it, but my bowling definitely is,” he joked.

Despite criticism over England’s limited warm-up schedule, Wood is content with the preparations. “The schedule is the schedule. I’m happy with what we’ve done. We managed to win the first game in India earlier this year despite minimal warm-up matches,” he said.

The pacer emphasised the importance of staying fresh ahead of the series opener on November 21. “I want to feel fresh going into that first game, having done enough but not too much. We’ve got good bowling depth—if one misses out, he’ll be ready for the next match,” Wood concluded.
