South African fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been drafted into the national squad for the series-deciding second Test against India. Ngidi, who last featured in a Test during the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s in June 2025, replaces injured pacer Kagiso Rabada.

Rabada missed the opening Test at the Eden Gardens due to a rib injury, as reported by Cricbuzz, and has now been ruled out of the second match as well.

With Rabada unavailable, South Africa fielded a spin-heavy attack in Kolkata, a move that proved successful as they clinched a 30-run win to take a 1-0 lead. Spinner Simon Harmer led the charge, taking two four-wicket hauls, including decisive figures of 4/21 in India’s second innings where the hosts were bundled out for just 93 while chasing 124.

Ngidi, who made his Test debut in January 2018, has played 20 matches in the format. His most recent appearance, the WTC final, saw him claim three crucial wickets in the second innings to help topple defending champions Australia.

South Africa will now aim to seal the series when they face India in the second Test scheduled from November 22 to 26 in Guwahati.
