NEW DELHI: Who will become the next BCCI president? The question has gripped Indian cricket ever since Roger Binny stepped down from his post. Earlier reports suggested that vice-president Rajeev Shukla, who took charge as acting president, was set to take over permanently. However, a twist has emerged, with fresh reports indicating that a legendary Indian player is emerging as the frontrunner to lead the most powerful cricket board in the world.
If this turns out to be true, the trend of former Indian players leading the BCCI will continue after Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the BCCI is considering a prominent former player for the president's role. Sourav Ganguly took charge in 2019 before being succeeded by 1983 World Cup winner Roger Binny. However, the report stated that a permanent appointment will be finalised at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM).
It also noted that the cricketer's acceptance of the role remains uncertain, though the selection is expected to be unanimous, with elections appearing highly unlikely.
The report suggests that joint secretary Devajit Saikia is likely to retain his position, while treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia and joint secretary Rohan Gauns Desai are also expected to continue in their respective roles.
For the IPL chairman's post, the names of former Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Sanjay Naik and current BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla are being discussed. Should Shukla return as IPL chairman, Bihar Cricket Association president and BJP leader Rakesh Tiwary may emerge as a strong contender for the BCCI vice-presidency.
