South Africa are sweating over Kagiso Rabada’s fitness for the second Test after the fast bowler was ruled out of the series opener at Eden Gardens due to a rib injury. The team management confirmed that Rabada is “undergoing further assessments” to determine the extent of the damage.
Rabada hurt his rib during South Africa’s first training session on Tuesday. He underwent a scan the following morning and attempted a fitness test on Friday, but lingering discomfort forced the team to withdraw him minutes before the toss.
South Africa had delayed the final call on his selection until match morning, hoping for improvement, but the medical staff advised against risking him. When asked about his chances of returning for the second Test in Guwahati starting November 22, the team manager said the pacer’s condition is still being evaluated.
With Rabada unavailable, Corbin Bosch was drafted into the playing XI for just his fourth Test, joining Marco Jansen and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder in the pace attack.
