After‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ India’s World Cup hero, Jemimah Rodrigues, decided to attack the cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, she chose the most musical path possible by reminding him that it is time to keep his word and sing a duet after India’s historic Women’s ODI World Cup triumph. With an amusing clip, Jemimah wrote on Instagram that she "can't wait to sing together" and she thus made a nice reference to the promise that Gavaskar made before the final by tagging ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌him.

“Ready with the Guitar”: Jemimah Rodrigues’s Musical Challenge to Gavaskar

Before the World Cup final against South Africa, Gavaskar had told India Today that he would sing alongside Jemimah if India went on to win the title. “If India win the World Cup, she and I — if she’s okay with it — will sing a song together. She’ll have her guitar, and I’ll sing along,” Gavaskar had said.

Now, with the trophy home, Jemimah’s sights are set on a different kind of duet. Her Instagram message was both playful and heartfelt:

“Hi Sunil Gavaskar sir, I saw your message. You said that if India win the World Cup, we both will sing a song together. So I am ready with the guitar and hope that you are ready with your mic. Lots of love.”

After‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ India’s record-breaking win at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, a lighthearted remark made by Jemimah Jeshwal has now been turned into a delightful post-victory challenge.

The story of Jemimah’s rise to this point is definitely one of her own strength and success. In the semi-final against Australia, the 24-year-old committed one of the most incredible acts in the history of women's ODI — a 127* off 134 balls which led India to a record chase of 339, the highest successful run chase in the format. The 167-run stand between Harmanpreet Kaur and her became the headline of India’s journey to the final.

However, in the final match, Jemimah failed to strike her brilliance as she got out for 24 off 37 balls, but her spirit and electric fielding were still very much a part of the team. The late drop of a catch couldn’t lessen her contribution as India defeated South Africa by 52 runs to win the ODI World Cup for the first time and put an end to the wait that lasted for decades.

What is more, this wouldn’t be the first time that they would sing together. At the BCCI Naman Awards 2024, while Jemimah was playing the guitar, Gavaskar was singing the timeless hit "Kya Hua Tera Wada". Now with the World Cup in their hands, people can’t wait for the legendary duo to perform their next ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌song.
