NEW DELHI: India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah tore through the South African batting lineup with unplayable bowling on the first day of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. He finished with sensational figures of 5/27, claiming his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Bumrah's five-fer also marked a rare feat as he became the first fast bowler since Ishant Sharma, who achieved the milestone in a Day/Night Test against Bangladesh at the same venue in 2019, to claim a five-wicket haul on the first day of a Test in India.

In fact, the last fast bowler to achieve the same in a traditional red-ball Test in India was South Africa's Dale Steyn in Ahmedabad back in 2008.

New Zealand pacer Matt Henry had also taken a five-wicket haul in last year's Bengaluru Test, but that came on the scheduled second day after the entire first day's play was washed out.

Riding on Bumrah's heroic performance, India bundled out South Africa for a paltry 159 in their first innings.

Opener Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton gave South Africa a promising start, adding 57 runs for the first wicket after captain Temba Bavuma opted to bat.

However, the rest of the batting lineup struggled to make significant contributions as India's bowlers kept things tight. Markram's 31 was the highest individual score, while only Wiaan Mulder, Tony de Zorzi, and Rickelton managed to cross 20-run mark.

For India, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each, with Axar Patel claiming one.
