Australia-born batter Joe Burns will not be part of Italy’s T20 squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, despite playing a pivotal role in the team’s historic qualification for the tournament.

The Italian Cricket Federation confirmed Burns’ omission ahead of the marquee event, stating that the decision followed discussions around his availability and contractual commitments. As Burns was unable to come to terms on a professional contract, the board opted to exclude him from the World Cup squad.

Explaining the move, the federation emphasised the importance of long-term stability and continuity as Italy prepares for its first-ever appearance at a global ICC event. The decision prioritised players with assured availability over short-term considerations.

In the same announcement, the Italian board named Wayne Madsen as Italy’s captain for the T20 World Cup. Madsen was chosen for his long-term commitment and leadership experience, having previously led the national side.

Despite the omission, the Italian Cricket Federation paid tribute to Burns, acknowledging his significant contributions both on and off the field during Italy’s qualification campaign.

Madsen will also captain Italy on their upcoming tour of Ireland, beginning January 23, which forms a crucial part of their preparations for the World Cup. A seasoned campaigner, Madsen has amassed 5,406 runs in T20 cricket at an average of 31.06 and has featured prominently in franchise leagues such as the SA20, The Hundred and the Pakistan Super League.

Italy will kick off their maiden World Cup journey with a curtain-raiser against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens on February 9, marking a historic moment for the nation on the global cricketing stage.
