Shubman Gill returns to T20I cricket with a point to prove, and former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes the upcoming South Africa series is the perfect stage for him to do it. Gill, who missed action due to a nerve-related neck injury in the first Test of the ongoing tour, is set to take charge at the top alongside his role as T20 vice-captain.

Pathan suggested that although Gill is often projected as an all-format batter based on his IPL performances, he still needs to secure his place in the shortest format. With five T20Is ahead most likely on batting-friendly pitches, the series could define his long-term role in the format.

“Shubman Gill needs to cement his place in 20-over cricket. We believe he is an all-format player, and this is his chance to prove it,” Irfan said on his YouTube channel.

Pathan added that while Gill might feel some pressure returning from injury, he has the ability and the ideal conditions to shine. He emphasised that five opportunities at the top are more than enough for a player of Gill’s calibre, especially on surfaces that offer pace and bounce, like Dharamsala.

India will kick off the five-match T20I series against South Africa on December 9 in Cuttack. After losing the Test leg 0-2 but bouncing back to win the ODIs 2-1, the T20 series will decide the overall winner of the tour. Gill returns alongside Hardik Pandya, who is back after recovering from a quadriceps injury picked up during the 2025 Asia Cup.
