Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan once again showcased his uncanny cricketing insight during commentary in the first T20I between India and South Africa at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, on December 9. While some may attribute it to luck, Pathan’s precise predictions reflect his deep understanding of the game.

Chasing 176 on a tricky wicket, South Africa lost Quinton de Kock in the first over. Tristan Stubbs initially looked in rhythm, hitting a couple of boundaries in his first eight deliveries. But Pathan had already advised that Indian bowlers should target the middle and leg stumps to cramp him up. Moments later, Arshdeep Singh executed the plan perfectly — the ball jagged in off the pitch, took Stubbs’ inside edge, and was safely pouched by wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma.

Pathan’s predictions didn’t stop there. Noting that Donovan Ferreira struggles against spin, he suggested turning to India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Chakaravarthy delivered a beauty outside off-stump; Ferreira attempted a cut shot, got a thick outside edge, and Jitesh made the catch.

India dominated the match, winning by 101 runs. The Proteas were bowled out for just 74 in 12.3 overs. Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each, while Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube chipped in with one apiece.

Pathan’s accurate analysis and India’s execution underlined the team’s preparation and tactical acumen, leaving fans in awe of both the players and the former all-rounder’s cricketing mind.
