NEW DELHI: In a major development, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee has dropped ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill from India's 15-member T20 World Cup squad, while Ishan Kishan has been included following his impressive performances in domestic cricket.
Axar Patel has been named vice-captain in place of Gill, who struggled with form in the shortest format. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma also missed out on selection for the showpiece event.
The same squad will also represent India in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in January.

Rinku Singh, previously omitted from India's squad for the South Africa series, has made a return for the T20 World Cup.
Agarkar admitted that Gill has been dropped from the squad for lack of runs.
"Obviously he (Gill) has been short of runs and since he wasn't picked, we needed a vice-captain," Agarkar said at the press conference.
Gill missed the final two T20Is against South Africa after picking up a foot injury during a nets session ahead of the abandoned match in Lucknow, but even beyond the setback, it was a disappointing year for him in the shortest format.
He managed only 291 runs across 15 innings, averaging 24.25 at a strike rate of 137.26, without registering a single fifty or century.
Kishan earned his recall after captaining Jharkhand to their first-ever Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph, sealing the title with a win over Haryana in the final.
The left-hander finished the tournament as the leading run-scorer, amassing 517 runs in 10 innings at an average of 57.44 and a strike rate in excess of 197.
Kishan smashed 101 off 49 balls -- his fifth century in the competition -- in the final equalling India T20I opener Abhishek Sharma’s record for the most hundreds in the tournament.
