South Africa spinner Simon Harmer, who grabbed 4/30 to bowl India out for 189 in a low-scoring first Test, said the inconsistent Eden Gardens pitch is far more playable than the “craters” he encountered on his previous India tour in 2015.

"The ball has spun but it hasn't been every single ball. Look, India want to win the Test match and they want to play on wickets that suit them, so we've got to find a way to beat them in their own condition,” Harmer said after day two's play.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh had also criticised the surface yesterday, calling it unpredictable and a real test for the batters.

India skipper Shubman Gill’s participation in the remainder of the opening Test is now uncertain after he was stretchered off with his neck immobilised on Saturday evening at Eden Gardens. Gill had managed just four runs before retiring hurt after facing three balls, clutching the back of his neck following what appeared to be a whiplash while slog-sweeping Simon Harmer for four.
