NEW DELHI: The selection of Jitesh Sharma over Sanju Samson in the first T20I between India and South Africa in Cuttack triggered a massive debate on social media. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now entered the discussion, offering his insights on the team’s choices and the implications for the World Cup.

Ashwin Weighs In

"There was a lot of talk before the game that Sanju should play, why is he not being played and all that. Whenever Sanju is dropped from the team, there is always a discussion, the question of whether he got a fair run, and all that. The moment Shubman Gill came into the side, and as a vice-captain, Sanju was always going to find it difficult to get into the XI," shared Ashwin in a video on his YouTube channel.

The former spinner explained that Sanju Samson’s position in the batting order has been a key factor in selection decisions.

Suggested Role for Sanju Samson

Ashwin further added that team management may try Samson at No. 3 if they wish to include him, highlighting his strength against spin.

"Sanju has not played enough at No.5, and Jitesh Sharma is there in the squad for his finishing abilities. That was the role he played for RCB, so it was always going to be difficult for Sanju. If you are playing Sanju, play him at No.3, use him against spin," he added.

India’s Dominant Victory

India won brilliantly in the first T20I, claiming a massive win over South Africa. Hardik Pandya returned in style with a scintillating half-century, guiding India to a commanding total.

The Indian bowlers were ruthless, bowling out South Africa for just 74 runs — their lowest T20I total against India.

Jitesh Sharma contributed a quick 10 not out off 5 balls, including a six, underlining his finishing abilities and justifying the team management’s faith in him.
