NEW DELHI: India have been hit with a penalty after being found guilty of a slow over-rate during the second ODI against South Africa on December 3 in Raipur. The match referee imposed a 10 percent fine on the team's match fee for failing to maintain the required over-rate.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees handed down the sanction after KL Rahul's side was found to be two overs short of the required rate, even after considering all permissible time allowances.

"In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," ICC stated in media release.

India's home T20I record against South Africa isn't what you had expected

As stand-in skipper, KL Rahul accepted the offence and the accompanying penalty, removing the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was brought forward by on-field umpires Rod Tucker and Rohan Pandit, along with third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal.

India lost the second ODI against South Africa despite Virat Kohli (102) and Ruturaj Gaikwad's (105) exceptional efforts with the willow as they posted a daunting total of 358/5.

In reply, Aiden Markram anchored the Proteas innings with a fantastic knock of 110 off 98 balls as South Africa chased down the target with four wickets to spare.

India went on to win the series, registering an easy nine-wicket victory in the third and final ODI in Vizag on Saturday.
