Wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu etched his name into the record books on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian to score a double century in Youth ODIs. The 17-year-old produced a sensational unbeaten knock against Malaysia in the U-19 Asia Cup, rewriting history with his explosive innings.
Kundu’s 209 not out came off just 125 deliveries and marked only the second double hundred ever recorded in Youth ODIs. The only other such feat belongs to South Africa’s Jorich Van Schalkwyk, who smashed 215 off 153 balls against Zimbabwe in Harare earlier this year.
Batting at No. 5, the left-hander unleashed a brutal assault on the bowling attack, striking 19 fours and seven sixes during his innings. His knock powered India U-19 to a massive 408 for seven after being asked to bat first.
India’s batting dominance had already been on display earlier in the tournament when Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hammered a 95-ball 171 against the UAE, the ninth-highest individual score in Youth ODI history. Sooryavanshi stitched together a 209-run partnership with Vedant Trivedi and followed it up with a rapid 87-run stand off just 36 balls alongside Kanishk Chouhan, setting the tone for another imposing total of 408 for seven in 50 overs.
