NEW DELHI: BCCI has stepped forward to assist Sri Lanka in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah by agreeing to play additional T20 Internationals during their upcoming tour later this year.

The move is aimed at raising funds to support relief and rehabilitation for those impacted by the devastating storm.

Tour Extension to Boost Relief Funds

Originally, India were scheduled to tour Sri Lanka in August for a two-match Test series as part of the World Test Championship. The BCCI has now decided to extend the tour by adding extra T20Is, with the revenue from these matches set to aid cyclone victims.

While the exact dates and venues for the added T20Is are still being finalised, Sri Lanka Cricket chairman Shammi Silva confirmed India’s readiness to step in.

He emphasised that India’s participation not only strengthens the bond between the two boards but also ensures strong viewership and sponsorship, providing much-needed financial support to Sri Lanka Cricket during this challenging period.

Challenges and Past Plans

India had earlier considered touring Sri Lanka in December to play two T20Is for the same cause. However, a broadcaster issue prevented the plan from materialising.

Eventually, both boards agreed that scheduling the additional matches during the August window would be more practical.

“There was a plan for India to come at the end of December to play two T20Is for fundraising, but there was simply not enough time to organise it, especially without a broadcaster,” Silva explained.

Cyclone Ditwah, which hit Sri Lanka in late November 2025, caused widespread destruction. Torrential rains and strong winds led to severe flooding, landslides, and extensive damage to infrastructure, disrupting livelihoods and claiming over 120 lives.

As part of its recovery efforts, Sri Lanka Cricket has also dedicated the upcoming home T20I series against Pakistan to the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” initiative. The three-match series, starting January 7, has been approved by the SLC Executive Committee, chaired by Silva.

Under this initiative, Sri Lanka Cricket will actively promote the #VisitSriLanka campaign during the Pakistan series. The campaign aims to highlight Sri Lanka as a top global tourism destination and support the revival of the tourism sector, which suffered significant losses due to the cyclone.
