Harmanpreet Kaur added another glittering chapter to her illustrious career as she became only the second Indian batter to complete 1000 runs in ICC Women’s ODI World Cups. The Indian captain achieved the milestone during India’s clash against England in Indore, where she led the chase of 289 with a composed 70-run knock. With this feat, Harmanpreet joined the legendary Mithali Raj, who has 1321 runs and stands as the second-highest run-getter in Women’s World Cup history. Harmanpreet currently sits seventh on the all-time list, which is topped by New Zealand’s Debbie Hockley with 1501 runs.

During the game, Harmanpreet and Smriti Mandhana batted brilliantly to put India up on the board with their amazing 125-run partnership for the third wicket from where the chase was comfortably set. But it was in the 31st over when England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt got rid of Indian skipper Harmanpreet for 70 just when the hundred looked very much on the cards.

At the beginning of the day, it was the England captain Heather Knight who led the charge with a very impressive 109 off just 91 balls — the highest score she had ever made in an ODI — hitting 15 fours and a six. The situation was well and truly set for a big total thanks to her innings alongside the 38 runs by Sciver-Brunt as England made their way to 288.

India’s Deepti Sharma was really a monster and came up with a brilliant 4 for 51, a record of her best ODI World Cup performance. As if that were not enough, she also achieved the milestone of 150 ODI wickets in the same match while dispatching such characters as Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones. The power and steam that England were exerting at the very start of the game petered out after the run-out incident of Knight as India’s bowling unit showed great discipline and energy to make it a close finish by not allowing them to score freely in the last overs.
