Harmanpreet Kaur stands on the brink of history as she edges closer to becoming the most successful captain in women’s T20I cricket. The India skipper is currently the second-most successful leader in the format, having guided her side to 75 victories in 129 matches.

India’s third T20I against Sri Lanka on Friday, December 26, presents Harmanpreet with a golden opportunity to reach a historic milestone. A win would see her draw level with former Australia captain Meg Lanning, who currently tops the list with 76 wins from 100 matches and remains one of the most decorated leaders in the format.

Meg Lanning’s legacy in T20I cricket is unmatched, having led Australia to four T20 World Cup titles in 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023. In comparison, India’s best showing at the T20 World Cup under Harmanpreet came in 2020, when she captained the side to the final before losing to Australia in the summit clash.

However, Harmanpreet recently carved her own place in history by leading India to their maiden World Cup triumph in 2025 on home soil. With the next T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in England in June and July 2026, India have already set their sights on adding another ICC trophy to their cabinet.

India currently lead the five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka 2-0 and will look to seal the series with another dominant display in the third match at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

Following the Sri Lanka series, India will tour Australia in February for a three-match T20I series, before heading to England for another three-match assignment. These challenging tours will act as crucial preparation ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

India have been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, South Africa and Australia, and will kick off their World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 14 in Birmingham.
