NEW DELHI: Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has thrown his weight behind Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the T20 World Cup, despite his recent struggles.

Speaking at an event on Wednesday, Harbhajan suggested that Surya may be holding back his best for the biggest stage.

“Maybe, he is saving it for the World Cup. Surya is a class player. I still believe that he is probably the No.1 player in this format. People often talk about how great AB de Villiers is, but we have our own guy who does the same job. I am hoping for some big runs from him,” Harbhajan said.

Speaking about the pressure of playing a World Cup at home, Harbhajan downplayed the external noise, saying that pressure is part of international cricket regardless of the venue.

“Playing international cricket itself is a pressure. It doesn't matter where you play. It's kind of a blessing to play in front of your home crowd, in your backyard. You know your condition better than the others, and the support you get is unbelievable.”

Harbhajan’s backing comes at a time when Suryakumar Yadav remains under heavy scrutiny ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.

In 19 T20I innings last year, Suryakumar managed just 218 runs, averaging 13 with a strike rate of around 123, well below the standards he has set over the years.

With expectations high and pressure mounting, Harbhajan’s support serves as a strong vote of confidence as Surya looks to rediscover his form on cricket’s biggest stage.
