Indian captain Shubman Gill broke his streak of losing the toss, by winning it after 6 matches as the second Test against West Indies, is in progress at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Gill, who became the Test captain prior to the England tour, lost all five tosses on that tour and again in the first Test of this series. It's no surprise that everyone was cheering and joking when he got a toss right. Even Bumrah and Gambhir couldn’t help themselves.

“Jassi ne toh run-up mark kar liya tha (Bumrah had already marked his run-up),” Gautam Gambhir quipped, while Bumrah joined in, saying, “Even Miyaan (Mohammed Siraj) marked his run-up.”

India, whose side were unchanged from the innings-and-140-run victory most recently in Ahmedabad, did well to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal maintained his dream run, scoring his seventh Test century and finishing on 173 off 253 at stumps, with the second day's play still to be negotiated.

Backing from selectors and team management to fill the all-important No. 3 position proved a good call for Sai Sudharsan, who scored a confident 87 off 165; KL Rahul started well but fell against the run of play for 38.

The day's cricket ended with India feeling safe at 318 for 2, with captain Shubman Gill (20*) now partnered with Jaiswal.
For the visitors, the only positive in a long day was Jomel Warrican (2/60 in 20 overs), as the West Indies continued to struggle for breakthroughs following their heavy loss in the first Test.
