Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir provided an important injury update on captain Shubman Gill following India’s defeat to South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Gill, who suffered a neck injury on Saturday, did not come out to bat in India’s second innings. He was subsequently admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata and reportedly kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for monitoring.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gambhir was asked about Gill’s availability for the second Test in Guwahati. He clarified that the final decision would rest with the team’s physiotherapists. “He is still being assessed. So, let’s see. The physios will take a call today evening, and we will take a call,” Gambhir said, giving fans hope but urging patience.
The first Test ended dramatically on the third day, with South Africa producing a remarkable comeback to secure a 30-run victory and take a 1–0 lead in the two-match series. Gambhir also addressed criticism of the Eden Gardens pitch, insisting that the wicket delivered exactly what the Indian team had requested. “This is exactly the pitch we were looking for. I feel the curator was very helpful, and this is exactly what we wanted,” he said.
Gambhir added that the wicket was not unplayable, emphasizing that it tested technique and temperament rather than being inherently unfair. “There were no demons in this wicket. Temba Bavuma scored runs, and Axar and Washi also scored runs. The point is, there is no use talking about the pitch all the time. This was a surface where your technique was tested and your mental toughness was challenged,” he explained. According to Gambhir, while attacking shots were riskier, batsmen with patience and the ability to grind out innings could succeed.
India now face a crucial decision regarding Gill ahead of the second Test, while South Africa carry momentum from their stunning Eden Gardens performance.
