NEW DELHI: Priyansh Arya announced himself in style when he smashed six sixes in an over during a blistering knock of 120 off just 50 balls in a Delhi Premier League match — an innings that thrust him into the spotlight ahead of the last IPL auction. The IPL 2025 runners-up Punjab Kings went all out in a fierce bidding battle to secure the promising youngster for a hefty sum of ₹3.8 crore.

In an exclusive interview with Sports Yaari, Priyansh, one of the exciting young batting talents, opened up about his journey, inspirations, and experiences in cricket.

Reflecting on his camaraderie with Digvesh Rathi, Priyansh clarified that their famous "signature celebration" during a match was purely in good spirit. "It was completely friendly, nothing aggressive at all," he smiled.

Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh's "animated notebook celebration" after dismissing Arya went viral and also resulted in him being fined for violating the IPL Code of Conduct.

When asked about his cricketing idol, Priyansh was quick to mention Virat Kohli. "Virat bhai is my inspiration. But honestly, during the IPL, I barely got the chance to speak with him. After our games, he would leave quickly, so apart from a hello, I didn’t really get to interact."

On the growing challenge of facing world-class bowlers in the IPL, Priyansh admitted there's one he particularly relishes playing against: "Jasprit Bumrah. He's extremely difficult to face, but that challenge excites me. I always wished to hit him for a six someday — and when I finally did in the IPL, it was a special moment.”

Talking about his closest bonds in the dressing room, Priyansh named Shashank Singh and Harpreet Brar as his best mates in the Punjab Kings camp.

When presented with a fun scenario — chasing 30 runs off 10 balls and having to pick between AB de Villiers MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli to do the job — Priyansh chose without hesitation. "Virat Kohli. He's the chase master."

Priyansh also recalled the valuable guidance he had received from senior players. Rohit Sharma once told him to continue playing the way he was, while MS Dhoni gave him advice he cherishes deeply: "Mahi bhai told me that when you’re doing well, don't get carried away, and when you're struggling, don't get too low. Always stay balanced at one level."

Speaking about his future goals, Priyansh credited coach Ricky Ponting for the immense belief he instilled in him during the IPL season. "From the start, Ricky sir backed me. Before my debut, he even messaged me on WhatsApp, saying: 'You're a great player, believe in yourself. Just keep things simple, the way you've been doing all year.’ That gave me so much confidence.”

Although Punjab Kings remain his first love, Priyansh admitted he enjoys watching Mumbai Indians as well. “I like their energy, especially Hardik Pandya's attitude and the way he bats. It's always fun to watch."

Reflecting on his performances in the DPL, including a memorable century, Priyansh remained humble: "Of course, scoring that hundred felt amazing. But right now, it hurts because the team isn't doing so well. Cricket is a team sport - even if you perform personally, you only feel good when the team wins. I just hope we can bounce back together."
