NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings are one of the most successful and popular franchises in IPL history, with five titles to their name under the legendary leadership of MS Dhoni. The former India captain's record as a skipper is remarkable, inspiring both young and seasoned cricketers to be part of his side.
In IPL 2025, Shreyas Gopal got that opportunity when CSK picked him at the auction for his base price of Rs 30 lakh. In an exclusive conversation with Sports Yaari, the leg-spinner opened up about what it feels like to play under Dhoni's captaincy.
What Shreyas Gopal said about MS Dhoni
When asked by Sports Yaari reporter Priyanshu Nawani about his experience of being in CSK under Dhoni, Gopal highlighted the clarity and tactical brilliance of the veteran leader.
"Being in a team led by Dhoni teaches you so much. From how to handle players, how to guide a new player in a tournament, to knowing which bowler to use in which over—these are lessons in tactical thinking. But what really struck me was seeing how grounded, empathetic, and caring he is.
The challenge of being MS Dhoni
Reflecting further, the spinner praised Dhoni's ability to remain grounded despite the immense pressure and adulation he carries.
"One also learns from him how to handle stardom. People think being MS Dhoni is easy, but it's very difficult. Fans make a lot of noise, but even then, staying humble, simple, empathetic, and sensitive is not easy. That's why we learn so much from him, and that's his greatness," Gopal added.
On his future IPL plans
"Of course, I'd love to play for CSK. Personally, I have a big desire to play for them. Even if I got offers worth billions, my heart would lean towards CSK because of the experience in the dressing room, the conversations, the input you get from senior players - it's priceless.
The next season is coming up, and the team is performing well. I'm also in good form, and it's a perfect platform, especially for youngsters, to showcase their talent to IPL scouts. It's a great opportunity for young players to show their hard work over the years."
