NEW DELHI: India’s 30-run loss to South Africa at Eden Gardens has reignited discussions about the team’s Test squad and its balance. Former captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has once again backed the inclusion of Mohammad Shami, who has been out of the Indian Test side since the WTC Final 2023.
Shami’s snub in recent squads has been widely discussed in the media.
Ganguly Stresses Strong Pace Core
Speaking to Sports Tak, Ganguly highlighted the need for India to build the Test team around their key pacers instead of searching for short-term fixes.
“He must have faith in Bumrah, Siraj and Shami,” Ganguly said. “I think Shami deserves a place in this Test team. Shami and the spinners will win Tests for him [Gautam Gambhir].”
He also sent a clear message regarding pitch preparation and batting foundations. “Play on good wickets. If his batters aren't putting up 350-400, he will not win Tests. He must play on good wickets, trust his people, and win Tests in five days, not in three,” Ganguly added.
Shami’s Form and Fitness
Shami has recently impressed in the Ranji Trophy, taking 18 wickets in four matches for Bengal at an average of around 16. His performance proves he is fully fit and capable of handling the rigours of Test cricket, countering earlier claims by Ajit Agarkar that fitness issues were behind his exclusion.
With his current form and experience, Shami could play a crucial role in strengthening India’s pace attack in the upcoming Tests.
