NEW DELHI: The Big Bash League witnessed record-breaking crowds on January 4, with fans turning out in unprecedented numbers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Optus Stadium. A total of 105,767 spectators attended the matches between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, and Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers.

A packed Melbourne Cricket Ground witnessed 68,124 fans turn up for a gripping contest in which the Renegades pulled off a dramatic chase, getting to 174 off the penultimate delivery to become the first team to lift the Melbourne Mace.

The fixture marked the highest attendance for a Big Bash League match since season six and the third-largest crowd in the tournament's history.

Earlier in the day, the second BBL Season 15 clash saw the Perth Scorchers register a 33-run victory over the Adelaide Strikers, played in front of 37,643 spectators.

The turnout set a new decade-long record, surpassing the previous high of 101,327 spectators who attended matches at the MCG and WACA Ground on January 2 during BBL Season 5.

Big Bash League executive general manager Alistair Dobson expressed his delight, highlighting the league's growing popularity and calling it a proud moment for the BBL.

"Yesterday was a landmark day and showcases the popularity and strength of the Big Bash. To set a new single day attendance record of 105,767 is a proud moment for the Big Bash Leagues and we thank all those who attended or watched on an incredible day for cricket," Alistair Dobson, Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, said
