Pakistan have handed a surprise Test debut to 39-year-old left-arm spinner Asif Afridi in the second Test against South Africa at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, which began on Monday. Afridi replaces leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed in the playing XI and joins Noman Ali and Sajid Khan in Pakistan’s spin-heavy attack.

Afridi’s inclusion has drawn attention due to his past suspension. The spinner was handed a one-year ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for his involvement in spot-fixing during domestic cricket but was allowed to return after serving six months. The PCB, however, has not publicly clarified the reason behind the reduction of his ban period.

With Afridi’s selection, Pakistan have opted to field two left-arm spinners — Afridi and Noman Ali. The latter was instrumental in Pakistan’s 94-run victory in the first Test in Lahore, where he picked up a 10-wicket haul. The home side is fielding only one specialist fast bowler in Shaheen Shah Afridi for the Rawalpindi encounter.

Meanwhile, South Africa have made key changes to their lineup. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj returns after missing the first Test due to fitness concerns, bolstering their spin department. The Proteas have also included tall pacer Marco Jansen in place of Wiaan Mulder, while off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been left out.

Pakistan will look to seal the two-match series, while South Africa aim to level it with improved performances in Rawalpindi.
