NEW DELHI: India suffered an early setback in the ODI series against New Zealand as all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out after picking up a rib injury during the opening match in Vadodara.

The 26-year-old managed to bowl five overs for 27 runs before leaving the field midway through New Zealand's innings and was unable to take the field again on Sunday.

Showing grit despite the injury, Sundar later walked out to bat at No. 8 and played his part as India went on to secure a four-wicket victory.

"Washington has been ruled out due to onset on discomfort in his left lower rib area," a BCCI official told PTI.

Washington became the third Indian player to be sidelined by injury in recent days. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was earlier ruled out of the ongoing series after sustaining a side strain last week, while Tilak Varma has also been sidelined for the first three T20Is against New Zealand following groin surgery.

India ODI captain Shubman Gill had given a an update on Washington following India's win on Sunday.

"Washington Sundar has a side strain and will go for a scan after the match," Gill said at the post-match presentation.
