The remarkable success of India's women's team in the World Cup has been described as a watershed moment for cricket and Indian sport. Coach Amol Muzumdar thinks that it's a watershed moment not only for women's cricket but for the journey of sport in the country with Harmanpreet Kaur leading the team's success.

A watershed moment for Indian sport, says Amol Muzumdar

The Indian women’s cricket team clinched its maiden World Cup title with a 52-run win over South Africa in Navi Mumbai last week, marking a golden chapter in Indian sporting history. The triumph has drawn parallels to the men’s 1983 World Cup victory, often credited with revolutionising Indian cricket.

“Talking about the 1983 moment, I feel this Women’s World Cup must be a watershed moment not just for Indian cricket as a whole — both men’s and women’s — but for Indian sports,” Muzumdar said in an interview with PTI Videos.

The win was even more remarkable considering India’s rocky start. After losing three consecutive matches, the team faced the prospect of an early exit. However, they bounced back spectacularly — defeating New Zealand to reach the semifinals and then chasing down a record total against seven-time champions Australia.

“There is no denying that the real architects are the players and the support staff. Everyone has chipped in with great professionalism. This victory is for every Indian,” Muzumdar said.

Despite a prolific domestic career — over 11,000 runs in 171 first-class matches — Muzumdar never played for India. Reflecting on that, he said, “I parked that thought in 2014 when I retired. This win is not about me; it’s about the team and the country.”

Looking ahead, Muzumdar said he prefers to live in the present. “I had planned till November 2, 2025. Beyond that, I haven’t planned anything. I’d like to stay in this moment,” he concluded.
